CREATE A SHORTCUT FOR SHUTDOWN ON UR DESKTOP

create a restart/shutdown icon on desktop!!

Instead of going all the way, clicking Start>Turn Off Computer and

selecting Shutdown or Restart, create their icons on your desktop :

create a SHUTDOWN ICON like this :

Right click on an empty area on your desktop.

Select New>Shortcut.

In the first box of the Create Shortcut Wizard, type : Shutdown -s -t 00

Click Next.

Name the shortcut : Shutdown , and click Finish.

Then select an appropriate icon for it !

Similarly create a RESTART icon but follow the folowing step instead :

In the first box of the Create Shortcut Wizard, type : Shutdown -r -t 00

Click Next.

Name the shortcut : Restart , and click Finish.

select an appropriate icon for it now

HERE 00 MEANS THE TIME TO SHUTDOWN UR COMPUTER IF U INCREASE THAT

VALUE SAY TO 10 IT WILL SHUT DOWN UR COMPUTER AFTER 10MIN

Dear all Computer Era readers,

Suppose U want to run "Mozilla Firefox" from the run line:

1. Navigate to C:Program FilesMozilla Firefox

2. Then create a shortcut for the Mozilla Firefox.exe

3. Then rename the shortcut as “MF”

4. Then drop the shortcut into C:WINDOWS or C:WINNT

Test it out by pressing Windows Key + R and typing “MF” and hit enter.

By this way, u can create ur own Run Commands for any programms

DEFINE A DEFAULT OPEN WHEN YOU RIGHT CLICK IN EXPLORER

Define a default open when you right click in Explorer :

When you right click on a file with a known extension (in Explorer) you get a choice to open the file. If the

extension is unkown, you get an open with choice.

You can define a default open choice for those unknown extensions and still have the open with by

amending the registry as follows:

1. HKEY_Classes_rootunknownshell

2. Double click on Shell

3. Add Key open

4. With open selected, add Key command

5. With command selected, add a Value with no name (leave it blank) and type REG_EXPAND_SZ

6. Enter the full path to the executable followed by a space and

"%1"

Example: Drive:DirectoryProgram.exe "%1"



DISABLING  UNUSED PORTS

I have just accidentally found out another way to give you an extra boost in

windowsXP's boot performance. This is done by disabling your unused devices in

Device Manager. for example, if you don't have input devices that are connected to

one of your USBs or COM ports, disabling them will give you an extra perfromance

boost in booting.

Go to Control Panel System Hardware tab Device manager

Disable devices that you don't use for your PC and then restart. See the difference for

yourself
Displaying Your Company Logo

Displaying Your Company Logo (or other bitmap) during logon :

Design an appropriate bitmap and place it in your NT/XP directory as YourLogoName.BMP. Use 8.3

naming convention.

Edit: HKEY_USERS .DEFAULTControl PanelDesktop

Double click or Add Value REG_SZ of Wallpaper and set it to the full path to YourLogoName.BMP.

Double click or Add Value REG_SZ of TileWallpaper. 0 is Don't tile, 1 is tile.

Double click or Add Value REG_SZ of WallpaperStyle. 0 is normal, 2 is stretch to fill the screen (which is

mutually exclusive with TileWallpaper = 1).

If you use a normal, not tiled logo, you can position it by adding the following REG_SZ values:

WallpaperOriginX set to the number of pixels from the left hand edge of the screen.

WallpaperOriginY set to the number of pixels from the top of the screen

Reboot to view your handywork.

NOTE: If you set WallpaperOriginX and WallpaperOriginY to 0, it centers the wallpaper. If you meant top

left corner, set both to 1.

DOES YOUR DESKTOP DISAPPEAR  REQUIRING LOGOFF LOG ON

Does your DeskTop disappear, requiring Logoff/Logon?

By default, if your shell crashes (Explorer.exe), it will automatically restart. If your shell crashes

(icons/Taskbar disappear) and your must logoff/logon to restore them,

edit the following Registry entry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWinlogon

Look at AutoRestartShell (a REG_DWORD) in the right hand pane. If it is 0 (do not restart), set it to

1(automatically restart).
DOWNLOADING WITH TORRENTS

We most of us in India experience many problems in downloading large files through IE or some other

download managers.

We have the problem of breaking the download due to failure of electricity at various levels of

transmission, missing of packets etc., and the another thing is our dedicated bandwidth.

For example we are mostly getting internet connection through cables recently. I am getting 128kbps speed

connection. This does not mean that I can download files with 128kbps. I am getting download speed of

16kbps approximately. This is due to sharing of the bandwidth 128/8 = 16. So approximately on an average

I can download 35-40MB per hour. More than 700MB (One CD) data can be downloaded per day. In India,

within one hour there will be every chance of breaking download and what ever downloaded up to that

level is gone forever.

Kindly bear with me for few minutes for going through the below.

BitTorrent: This is what I rely upon based on 5 years of internet expeience.

What is BitTorrent: It is one of the P2P (Peer to Peer) sharing system, basing on more you upload more the

download.

How to get download of files:

1. You have to download BitTorrent Clients like "Azureus", "Bit Tornado", "utorrent" or latest FlashGet.

Azureus is a Java Based client so you should install Java Runtime Environment also.

Google for BitTorrent Clients, there are many. I use Azureus and FlashGet. I satisfied with them.

BitTornado also useful. But many techies suggest utorrent also.

2. Now go to the websites giving torrent links. You can find many torrent sites by googling. So many sites

giving us links for torrent files whith their health status.

3. Download the torrent files and open them in any torrent client including FlashGet. Gradually the

download speed increases to the maximum of your connection speed.

4. You can shutdown your computer and when you restart you can resume the download from where you

stopped that one.

5. Assurance: I get much assurance with this type of download.

There are many techies who know more than me about BitTorrent are requested to add some more pros and

cons of that way to this thread.
